“Yogurt is good for your gut”—I’m sure most of us have heard this phrase at least once.

A spoonful of yogurt at breakfast. A fermented milk drink when digestion feels off. These habits have become quite normal in Japan too.

But here’s the question: how much of this “gut-friendly” feeling is actually backed by science? What does the research really tell us about fermented dairy products—yogurt, kefir, cheese—and their effect on digestive health?

There’s a review paper that tackled exactly this question by gathering and analyzing human studies on the topic. Published online in 2025 and appearing in the nutrition journal Nutrition Reviews, Volume 84, Issue 6 (June 2026, Oxford University Press), it comes from a research team at UC Davis known for their work on fermented foods (Bui & Marco, Nutrition Reviews, Vol.84, Issue 6, 2026, DOI: 10.1093/nutrit/nuaf114).

What exactly are fermented dairy products?

Fermented dairy products are foods made by fermenting milk using lactic acid bacteria and other microorganisms.

Common examples include yogurt, drinkable yogurt, kefir (a fermented milk beverage popular in Eastern Europe), and cheese.

These foods contain microorganisms that multiplied during fermentation, plus various compounds produced by those microorganisms. For a long time, researchers have wondered whether these elements might somehow influence the environment inside our digestive system.

Testing 37 human studies, one by one

What makes this review special is that it focused on 37 studies where actual people ate or drank fermented dairy products—not animal experiments or test tube studies.

The breakdown: 12 studies on yogurt, 17 on fermented milk, 3 on kefir, and 1 on cheese. Each study examined how consuming these products affected digestive symptoms or “biomarkers” (measurable indicators of body condition).

This approach—building up a picture from multiple studies—helps reveal patterns that a single study might miss.

Why does fermentation help your gut?

Before diving into the results, let me explain the thinking behind why fermented dairy might support digestive health.

First, there’s the action of live microorganisms. Some yogurts and fermented milk products contain living lactic acid bacteria from the fermentation process. These bacteria are thought to reach the intestines and temporarily influence the balance of bacteria living there.

Second, there are compounds created during fermentation. When microbes ferment milk, they produce lactic acid and various other substances that can affect the body. Small bioactive peptides—created when milk proteins break down—may also play a role in how our bodies function.

Third, there’s digestive ease. During fermentation, some of the lactose (milk sugar) gets broken down. That’s why people who feel bloated after regular milk often find yogurt gentler on their stomachs.

In other words, the benefits might come from a combination of factors: the bacteria themselves, the compounds they produce, and easier digestion. But exactly which factor matters most? That’s still being figured out.

The changes researchers observed: abdominal comfort and inflammation markers

The paper identified several positive findings reported across the studies.

On the symptom side, researchers found that abdominal pain, discomfort, bloating, constipation, and the distress of IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) improved in several studies. IBS is a frustrating condition where people suffer digestive upset even though medical tests show nothing obviously wrong.

On the biomarker side, one finding stood out: blood levels of TNFα (tumor necrosis factor-alpha), a substance linked to inflammation, decreased in multiple studies. A drop in TNFα suggests inflammation in the body is settling down.

And here’s something important: among all the studies reviewed, not a single one reported that fermented dairy products harmed digestive health. As an everyday food choice, it raised no major red flags.

But some studies found no effect

Here’s a reality check worth keeping in mind.

Among the studies reviewed, 10 found no clear-cut benefits. In other words, not every study showed that fermented dairy was gut-friendly.

This isn’t a contradiction—it’s just how research works. The people studied were different, the types and amounts of fermented products varied, the study lengths differed, and the measurement methods weren’t identical. That’s why results naturally differ from study to study.

The authors themselves concluded that higher-quality research is still needed before we can say with certainty that fermented dairy improves digestive health.

This paper is “a synthesis of existing research to show the overall picture”—not proof that “everyone who eats fermented dairy will fix their digestion.” Let’s be clear about that.

How to use this in everyday life

So what does this all mean for your daily table?

One takeaway is that fermented dairy products are “a practical option to include in everyday meals, with some attention to what works for your body and which products you choose.” Even if the effects vary from person to person, when there are no reports of harm and multiple reports of relief from abdominal discomfort, there’s reason to include them mindfully in your routine.

Morning yogurt, a fermented milk drink as a snack, a bit of cheese in a meal—fermented dairy fits easily into daily eating without needing to do anything special.

But there are cautions. Sweetened yogurt and drinking yogurts often contain a lot of sugar. Some cheeses are high in salt or fat. Adding more just because “it’s good for your gut” could create other problems. Choosing unsweetened versions and keeping portions reasonable matters.

Here’s something reassuring for those of us eating a Japanese diet: fermented dairy isn’t the only source of fermentation’s power. Miso, natto, pickles, koji—fermented foods have deep roots in Japanese cooking. Fermented dairy products and fermented soy or grain products are different in origin and in which microbes they contain. That’s exactly why combining Western fermented foods with Japanese fermented traditions naturally expands what appears on your table.

This review focused on fermented dairy, but the bigger idea—“using the power of microbes in food”—is something Japanese food wisdom has long understood. In a way, research from across the ocean is shining new light on the value of food culture that’s always been close to home.

The real key is not relying on any single food, but building a balanced diet that includes fermented foods and maintaining it comfortably for the long haul. Yogurt, kefir, miso, natto—enjoy them as parts of that bigger picture, without pressure.

I’ve heard “yogurt is good for your gut” many times over the years. Personally, I always had a vague sense that it was a gentle, digestive-friendly food. But seeing this review paper really made me realize that the relationship between fermented dairy and gut health isn’t simply a matter of “it works” or “it doesn’t.” Results shift depending on the person, the product, and the specific conditions of each study.

I love fermented foods, but I don’t think of them as medicine. Yogurt, miso, natto, pickles—they’re foods that make our daily meals a little richer. Rather than forcing myself to eat them because they sound healthy, I think it’s better to enjoy them in ways that fit naturally into my life.

What fascinated me about this paper was how it considers not just the bacteria themselves, but also the compounds created during fermentation and how easy the food is to digest. Yogurts and fermented milks contain live bacteria, but they also have lactic acid and peptides made through fermentation. And while regular milk makes some people bloated, yogurt often sits easier. The benefits of fermented dairy can’t be explained by one thing alone.

But I do want to mention the cautions. Some sweetened yogurts and drinking yogurts have a lot of sugar. Certain cheeses are high in salt or fat. Some people’s bodies don’t get along with dairy, some have milk allergies, and others have trouble with lactose. So rather than increasing the amount just because “it’s supposed to help,” it’s important to notice what works for your own body and enjoy these foods in reasonable amounts.

For me, fermented dairy is just as important as Japanese fermented foods. A bowl of miso soup. A serving of natto. A bit of pickle on the side. And yogurt or cheese added to that mix. Bringing together Western and Japanese fermented traditions makes mealtimes more interesting without feeling forced.

And it’s equally important not to rely on food alone. I run regularly too. Eating fermented food, moving your body, sleeping well, not overeating—health isn’t decided by any one of these things. It’s the small habits stacking up that create who we are.

Through writing this article, I’ve come to feel there’s no need to either oversell fermented dairy or dismiss it. Research shows positive signs. But there’s still much we don’t understand. So I’ve settled on an attitude of not expecting miracles, but also feeling comfortable including these foods in my everyday life.

Fermented foods have been part of human life for centuries. Modern research is gradually shining light on them. When I think about it that way—that a simple glass of yogurt carries within it the work of microorganisms and human knowledge—the meal in front of me seems a little richer.

Going forward, I want to think of fermented foods not as “something that cures problems,” but as nourishment that quietly supports my daily life.
